The Book Scars on the Soul | Jehe Bereeni

Remaining inactive and silent can often bring about the death and suffering of thousands. Jehe bereeni. Scars on the soul.

Scars on the body can be healed,
now we’re trying to treat the scars on the soul. At the very least by not staying silent.

To capture this groundbreaking project, Martin Bandzak and Denisa Augustinova did travel to Northern Iraq regularly in last five years. They were granted exclusive access to document the life of traumatized Yazidis community, still living in displacement camps. The outcome – which is now a limited edition book, titled Jehe Bereeni – is a moving portrait of genocide survivors – women and girls taken as sex slaves, boys turned to be a soldiers. As well as being a tragic reminder of mankind’s negligence to humanity, these images also radiate warmth; offering admiration and hope for the future of these people.
