Suffering is a storyline featuring the best and worst of human passions: courage and heroism, and hatred and brutality. These contrasts, and present danger and distress in the context of life itself, gives the characters and settings a strange intensity. And the spectators comment, and don’t hold back from judging.
One reason is that suffering has no face. The dehumanisation of suffering leads us to apathy. We’ve gotten desensitised, and we no longer perceive things. Only a specific human being, and her story, can take us back to being human.
