Why does MAGNA intervene in Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is considered the second poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, it is undergoing demographic changes, as its population is mostly made up of teenagers and young people. Approximately 50% of children and youth live in poverty and 19% of them in extreme poverty.

Chronic malnutrition is twice as high in rural areas as in cities and reaches up to 27% among children aged 6 to 9 years. Maternal mortality was estimated at 100 deaths per 100,000 births in 2008. Maternal mortality mainly affects poor women with a low level of education and limited access to quality health services.

In Nicaragua, the MAGNA teams spent 10 years treating an endangered population in the forgotten rural areas of Sutiava. The project was completed in 2017 after the National Ministry of Health included the Sutiava area in the health plan and the rate of underage pregnancy dropped significantly.
