Why does MAGNA intervene in Vietnam?

Vietnam is a densely populated country with almost 87 million people. Although many people still associate Vietnam with war, it is actually a country full of enchanting natural beauty.

However, Vietnam suffers from a concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemic. It means that the highest rate of prevalence is so far among the so-called the primary HIV population, which includes intravenous drug users, prostitutes, and homosexuals. For these population groups, the general spread of the disease is around 28% within one province, but the prevalence within the total population of the country is 0.53%. This corresponds to approximately 293,000 people infected with HIV in 2007.

In Vietnam, MAGNA teams spent 2 years treating HIV/AIDS mothers and newborns. The project ended in 2012 after the National Ministry of Health included early diagnosis as prevention to stop mother-to-child transmission of HIV in its program.
