MAGNA teams have been providing humanitarian medical assistance in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan for over 10 years. The escalation of tensions in the region is devastating, especially for those living in precarious conditions. We see thousands of people fleeing their homes, children at risk of hunger. Let’s help them.

Martin Bandzak on the situation in the Middle East and the possibilities of help.
In 2024, I witnessed firsthand the horrors of conflict, moving our team and patients from one shelter to another, distributing medicine, supplies, and providing psychological support to women, girls, and others who fled their homes with nothing: absolutely nothing. Now I see it happening again, with women and girls forced to flee violence and seek refuge.

Lebanon

Sirine, MAGNA project coordinator in Lebanon, talks about the current situation and how MAGNA teams on the ground are responding to it.

MAGNA in Lebanon is currently mobilizing its teams and working with partner organizations and the Ministry of Health to organize the distribution of urgently needed medicines and medical supplies, goods, hygiene kits and other essential items to provide immediate assistance to displaced families, including psychosocial support. Our mental health team is supporting the affected population and our patients 24/7.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan is experiencing an escalation of insecurity on its borders – fighting is intensifying on the border with Pakistan. This renewed fighting is putting enormous pressure on communities that are already vulnerable and exhausted by years of crisis, conflict and chaos.

Afghanistan has already seen an influx of more than 2.5 million returnees from Iran and Pakistan in 2025. Even before the latest escalation, forecasts had predicted a similar influx in 2026 – but renewed fighting could push these numbers even higher, placing an unbearable strain on woefully underfunded humanitarian aid.

Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most serious hunger crises, with one in three Afghans – 17.4 million people – in urgent need of food aid. Child malnutrition has reached alarming levels, with 3.7 million children expected to need treatment in 2026.

MAGNA currently has over 1,000 healthcare professionals in the country, providing access to healthcare in 75 hospitals and performing 140,000 outpatient medical consultations every month. At the same time, we hospitalize an average of 2,200 patients every month and assist in 3,500 births in supported maternity hospitals.
